Stepping away from Lanyon, I called Tripp and briefed him about her claims.

To my utter shock, he verified the red-shoes-on-Cherry-Street arrest.

“She’s telling the truth,” he said simply. “She’s in trouble.”

“Okay.” I drew the word out and glanced sidelong at Mark, who was still glowering at Kay.

“While keeping tabs on Ross, I saw the whole thing go down,” Tripp explained. “He was the arresting officer in the Lanyon incident.” He gave a small chuckle. “Frankly, I thought it was going to end with Lanyon’s stiletto in his eye, but she allowed herself to be taken to the station peacefully.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about this earlier?”

“I tried to, but you hung up on me.”

“And you don’t believe the arrest was staged for your benefit?” I asked.

“No,” Tripp said. “I don’t believe Ross has any idea that he’s under surveillance. I’ve observed and recorded him engaging in numerous acts of corruption, any of which would be fire-able offenses. If he was on to me, he would be acting like a choirboy.”

“He’s that overt?” I asked.

“He’s careful not to get himself caught by the general public. I’m not the general public,” Tripp said. “But I still haven’t been able to figure out who he’s getting his orders from. Logic dictates that it’s somehow connected to the DOI, but I can’t prove it yet. However, I can tell you this. Once word of the FBI raid on the DOI went around the station, the atmosphere got real interesting.”

“Any word on Castille and his crew?”

“None yet. But gathering evidence is step one. Interviews come later.”

Castille must know things were unraveling. I wished he were already off the streets. People who panicked tended to make bad decisions. And they usually made those decisions in my general direction.

“So what do we do about Lanyon?” I asked. “Mark and I are supposed to be helping Tricia move her stuff. We can’t babysit.”

“I’d like to hear what she has to say,” Tripp said. “And you two need to stay well clear of her. Just in case. Let me deal with her. I’m on the way.”
